Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
