Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, prompting him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
